Prompt Engineering vs Context Engineering
Distinguish instructions from the evidence, tools, state, and memory surrounding a business AI task.

The short answer
Prompt engineering focuses on the instructions and examples for a task. Context engineering considers the wider information available during a run. When a correct instruction is paired with irrelevant or stale evidence, improving only the instruction may leave the failure unchanged.
Compare the operating choices
| Decision dimension | Prompt design | Context design |
|---|---|---|
| Primary question | What task and output should the model produce? | What information and tools should be available now? |
| Typical artifact | Instructions, examples, and response requirements. | Source selection, retrieval rules, state, and tool interfaces. |
| Failure to inspect | Ambiguous instructions or inconsistent examples. | Missing evidence, conflicting documents, or stale state. |
| Test discipline | Hold the context constant when comparing prompts. | Hold the task constant when comparing source and state strategies. |
A business scenario
A customer brief assistant follows the requested format but uses notes from the wrong account. A longer instruction does not fix the account selection bug. The team needs a verified customer identifier, current account evidence, and a clear distinction between retrieved material and operating instructions.
This example is illustrative. Use your own approved records and business constraints to decide whether the same distinction applies. Write the failure you want to remove before choosing a technology.
A practical decision process
- Inspect the actual input bundle for a failed run.
- Separate task instructions, evidence, tool outputs, and retained state.
- Remove irrelevant or superseded information and verify source identity.
- Test prompt and context changes independently so the cause of improvement is visible.
Acceptance test
Give the assistant a current account note and a contradictory archived note. Confirm source authority is preserved and the archive does not silently override the current record.
The mistake to avoid
Appending every document to the request and expecting stronger instructions to resolve all contradictions.
Record the choice
Save the alternatives considered, the evidence from your trial, the accepted quality threshold, and the maintenance owner. Include a condition that would cause you to revisit the decision: a changed source collection, a new deadline, a different output contract, or a new failure pattern.
Do not compare one approach on clean examples and the other on difficult ones. Reuse the same approved cases and count the complete path to an accepted result, including review, retries, and reconciliation.
